The other week I received an awesome question about creating content for your Instagram account on how to know what to post on your page; and consistently keep coming up with new content to post about.
This is great question and I'm going to share the exact steps on creating consistent for your Instagram that your fans will love.
This is part one of two, so stay tuned for the next post coming up in the series.
The first step in knowing what to post and how to come up with ideas to consistently post comes down to:
Having complete clarity on goals you want to achieve with your Instagram account.
Being crystal clear on who you are posting your content for / who you want to attract with the content you are posting
Hint: you'll only know the answer to the second part when you have complete clarity on the goals you have for you Instagram and how this fits into the overall goals you have for your business.
Once you know what you want to achieve and who you are posting for, it becomes so much easier to have ideas and know exactly the type of content they will love.
Ok, so let’s start with creating goals for your Instagram account.
Creating goals for your Instagram
First up decide what it is that is most important to you with your Instagram - what is that you want to achieve?
• Perhaps it is driving sign-ups to your newsletter or opt-in; or
• Driving people to your latest blog post; or
• Using Instagram as a place to share your latest work and get referrals to your business.
Whatever your goal is will help determine the type of content you share as well as how you strategically use your profile and bio to help you achieve this goal.
If you are going to set a goal of reaching a certain number of followers, I would ask why?
Because having a high number of followers is completely pointless if it is not helping you with your overall business objectives.
A small, but highly engaged audience is far more valuable than having a large audience who don’t give a toss about what you do and have zero intention of ever interacting with you.
Who are you trying to reach?
Next up, who are you talking to?!
You need to know exactly who you want to attract and who you are talking to with every single post you make.
The best way to do this is to get inside your ideal reader’s head so you know what they are going to like / dislike and what they are likely to interact with.
Write out the answer to these questions and you will come up with a snapshot of who you want to attract:
Is your ideal reader a man or a woman?
How old are they? (Think of a specific number, not a wide range)
Where do they live?
What is their level of education?
Are they currently working?
Are they holding jobs or running their own businesses?
What is the estimated level of annual income?
What is their problem you can solve? What are their needs?
What is keeping them from solving this problem? What have they tried that didn’t work?
What other interests do they have?
What times of the day are they checking their Instagram account?
What would they find valuable?
What would they be inclined to share if your post had an impact on them?
The final step: give this person a name!
Once you have created a persona or avatar for your ideal reader, then you are ready to start creating a content strategy they are going to not only LOVE, but want to engage with you and better yet - share it!
Stay tuned for the next post in the series where I’ll take you through the step by step process to creating an Instagram content strategy for your ideal reader.
